Golf Ball in a cage

I have been making some golf ball in a cage (Youtube ) for presents out of softwood and they work out quite nicely. I want to make them out of hardwork and have tried Oak and Ash but they just break. Which is the most grain flexible hardwood that i can buy in the UK

Beech is often steamed for bentwood furniture and tends to have a fine straight grain - may be worth a try.

The arrow through the glass bottle is usually done with lime, might be worth trying that.

Steamed oak is quite mouldable.
