I have some cocobolo to glue up, I have read various items regarding the need to wipe off the oils with a solvent and using epoxy seems to be recommended most commonly.

Main problems are that acetone is most commonly recommended and this is not easy to source here in the UK - anyone know any alternatives?

And is epoxy best?

Isn't nail varnish remover acetone? :-k Steve Knight, who does more than a little gluing up of exotics, seems to recommend freshly milled/sanded stock and using Gorrilla Glue. Some stuff here, fwiw.

Cheers, Alf

Cellulose thinners, avalable in quantity from paint suppliers, and as Alf said, nail varnish remover, are pretty much the same thing as acetone, if not exactly the same thing

Acetone is very easy to obtain. Look up your nearest glass fibre and resin supplier, boatbuilders, canoe makers etc. Strand Glass used to be national suppliers. Sold in 5 litre cans as brush cleaner for polyester resin and is cheap!

Just to follow on from what aldel says, buy the brush cleaner which is reclained acetone and is a lot cheaper than the pure acetone. Look in yellow pages for your nearest stockist of Fibre Glass materials.
