Hi everyone

Still quite new to turning but learning.

I want to turn a bowl using contrasting timber glued together. Should the grain run the same way or at right angles to the piece below or perhaps it doesn't matter and depends on what final effect I want?

It shouldn't make any difference to the turning, it's more aesthetic.

Depending on the timber, it could make the whole thing a lot more stable by crossing the grain.

The important thing to remember is that End Grain may not give you as good a bond as Side Grain, if using a good quality adhesive then it's usually fine for normal turning but do not mount in chuck with undue expansion mode pressure, it's likely to burst open on you, keep in compression where possible.

Dependant upon construction and number of layers it's almost inevitable that you will have some End Grain surfaces to bond, do not sand them smooth, a decent flat cut surface is best key.
