Hello All, just taken up woodworking and I have a question, I need to glue some rough sawn timber, long grain to long grain, and as the joining faces are quite rough should I plane them first. It will have what I call an 'Agricultural' finish so neatness is not that important, cheers, Andrew

It depends.

If you use ordinary PVA wood glue, you need a smooth, planed surface.

If you are going for something really rough and ready, you could use one of the many building adhesives out of a cartridge (Gripfill, Pink Grip etc) and that will stick ok. Provided that the rough surface is pretty large and not so rough that bits of it drop off!
