Hi
I am just about to dowel and glue a chair cushion frame, which glue to use for the dowels ,Cascamite or Gorilla glue. No doubt the chair will get a lot of twisting during it's life . The frame is 20 x75 and in parts 30 mil wide. I was thinking of using 10 mil dowels ,should I go for a smaller dia. as when doing mortice & tenon the tenon is usually 1/3 rd of the thickness.

I don't like Cascamite in stressed joints such as chairs - it seems to go very brittle and crack up in central heating . That said, I don't like PU so I'd use PVA. This is my opinion, it's not writ in stone.

I think gorilla glue, which I believe is aliphatic pva would be good. I know lots of people on here like titebond which Is a similar type glue.

Cascamite is an excellent glue and easy to clean up, but as Phil says is brittle, its like glass once set.

Gorilla is PU afaik - Wiki agrees.

Thanks for the replies re: glue I have used Titebond before but a long time ago, but will try the PVA that I have on a test piece first, it's in the house like me keeping warm, as I know pva does not like frost
any ideas on the size of dowels,
Richard

It's only a fairly narrow piece of wood so the holes will be quite close. I would use the same rule as a mortice - not more than a third of the thickness. (imo).

Thanks for the info. Phil.p That is what I will do. Does anyone make their own dowels, and if so what sort of wood is best hard or soft wood.?

Hardwood's probably better, but a cushion frame is hardly going to be stressed so I don't think it's that important. If it were the actual chair, I'd say hardwood definitely.

Yes I agree however the webbing is in the right placed on top of the frame, quite tight========= just in the right place for a foot when changing a light bulb!! that has,, no doubt the poor old chair has been used for since it was made well over 150 years ago.

Oops! My apologies for wrong information. I was working from memory having used a pot of Gorilla wood glue some years ago
