I have a cherry tree in the garden and I am going to give it the chop ( and I am not giving out my address). I know how prone it is to splitting but to give me a slightly better chance I thought I would wait until Autumn would I be better waiting a few months more like into winter to give the sap time to drop a bit

Late autumn or winter I think would be best but cherry just like walnut, maple, horse chestnut and birch will bleed at all times of the year if you prune them so sap would appear to be still active to some extent.

Mind you with the winters we have the poor trees don't know when to let the sap drop

I am just trying to give me the best chance of getting something out of it
