Hi, I've just moved house and found that the side gate is as rotten as a pear. Making a new one looks like it is within the scope of my woodworking skills but I'm not sure on what wood to use and what to treat it with. Any suggestions?

The size of the gate is 6foot by 3foot and my budget is very low.
Thanks for any suggestions.
George

You could make a ledge and brace type gate out of softwood decking. Or even cheaper is gravel board from a fencing supplier. It's a bit rustic tough.

If your budget can stretch to Western Red Cedar it's durable and doesn't need preservative - fades to a silvery grey colour. You can sometimes pick-up seconds (e.g. T&G with the T or G split off ) very cheap.
