So i finally got round to the project that 'started it' off for me. Now that i've got a workbench to work on, a coffee table to put my coffee on, we finally have a garden bench to sit on for the summer!!

Made from all reclaimed wood (the seat/back are old scaffold boards planed/sanded as best i could get them whilst keeping as much character as possible).

First time learning mortise/tenon, so they're a bit rough and ready (or is it rustic?). Went for through tenons on the end frames, and lap joints connecting the end frames to the seat frame (i'm sure im missing the proper terms for these..). Had a few hiccups/setbacks during the process, but those were just opportunities to learn.

There will be a second, slightly smaller (and hopefully a little neater) bench to come, to make this into a sectional 'L' shaped bench.

Have to give the mrs credit for applying the finish of course (needs another couple of coats :) )

As always, appreciate any feedback/tips :D

Cheers,

Nick

I love it Nick :D So the smaller bench will fit at the side with no arm, are you going to put in a corner table?

I think that looks really cool. I think it's calling out for some proper cushions made so that it's an outdoor sofa!

Thanks both!

@Pete, yep the smaller one will sit next to the lower section on the left there. Funny you should mention the corner table, initially we hadn't planned on it, but we had company over to test it out for a bbq the other day and the mrs' brother said 'could do with a corner table this' so now i'm considering it!

@Monka The cushions are also part of the plan!! Mrs is just deciding whether she wants to buy some or make them. I'm trying to convince her to make them herself, so the whole thing is made off our own backs then and we can be proud of it together.

Thanks for the comments/feedback :D

Cheers,

Nick

I like the idea of making the cushions so it's all hand crafted. If you're making cushions then maybe see if you can get any boat/marine upholstery material which is the stuff that they use for covering cushions on yachts so can stay out in the rain.

I think I've managed to all but persuade her to do it herself. Passed on your info about marine upholstery too, she likes that idea as it means less faffing about in the long run and it can all just stay outside :)

Cheers!

Hi folks, quick update for those interested!

I actually finished this a few weeks back, but completely forgot to post pics. So here they are, my 2 benches.

The cushions are now in progress, my girlfriend decided to buy big ones from Dunelm, unpick the stitching and restitch them into bigger, custom length sizes. Covering is bought, that’s not been started yet though.

I jokingly called these ‘The Lyndon Collection’ to the Mrs, as the branding on the scaff boards is ‘Lyndon’, so it sort of stuck.

Really happy with how it all came out, not perfect by any means, but I learned a hell of a lot (and enjoyed myself enormously) in the process.

Cheers!

Nick
