No idea on the name, if it is a name, but it's a classic design and a useful tool, so you got a bargain.

They are a nice example of a good tool which is not specially collectable, therefore cheap to buy. That may be because there is no catalogue with lots of differently numbered models, so there is no possibility of collecting a "full set" as there is with Stanley, Preston etc.

The usual challenge is with replacement blades, if you need one, where the options include using a bit of bandsaw blade or cutting a strip off an old saw to make your own. You could cut a strip with or without the teeth, according to your appetite for filing!

Upon closer examination when it arrived it is stamped 'ETREL 1944' with the war dept arrow.

Does anyone know what this refers to please as i was going to take back the flaky varnish but am now reluctant.

If the stamp is grouped as you wrote it, it sounds like the "ETREL" is probably an army designation (likely an acronym), and the tool is unbranded.
