Forstner bits

this may be a stupid question but do forstner bit need sharpening from new, ive bought a 40mm one and it can not cut through butter, i used varying speeds on the pillar drill on 4x2 soft wood and it didnt go in half a mill. am i doing it wrong or have i been ripped off

Take/send it back

Expect to pay £15-20 for a half decent quality one in that size

A clico one could be as much as £50.

I'll second the Screwfixbog recommendation, bought a set on offer a few months ago and am really quite impressed better than the Axminster set I also have
