Is there much difference between the cutting abilities of forstner bits and spade bits?
Well this jig is usable with a Forstner bit

but I would not want to try it with a spade bit
I have cut nearly 200 notches with a cheap bit in the Iroko chair slats I am making, it works a treat.

I agree that the Clico bits look superb. Problem is that I need a 34mm diameter Forstner bit but Clico don;t go up that high.

I bought a cheapy from Axminster but the cutting edges are pretty poor, small nicks etc. Can anyone recommend a source of larger diameter quality Forstner bits?

Hi Chris

Yes - I had seen these but I really need a 34mm as it is for a hinge mounting on a kitchen door. The perfectionist in me wants 34mm and won't settle for 35mm!

I used my CMT 35mm for this purpose and it worked perfectly.

There are also of course specific drill bits for this purpose too. from folk like Isaac Lord.

Hi all

I have the Axminster set that Chris refers to and although I have only used 2 of them so far it seems to be pretty decent although only time will tell.
The holes I have cut have been very easy and the resulting edges nice and clean.

Cheers

Tony

I can assure you that 35mm is the correct size for kitchen hinges
John

Yep - kitchen hinges are 35mm. Specialist cutters can be found very cheaply at any hardware store and the likes of Wickes, B&Q etc. No need to buy a set if you don't want to.
I think they are called something like "kitchen hinge cutter"

rsinden try planet saw tooth forstner bits they do a 1 3/8 size phone /n is 01686 626260. but as the guys say its 35m/m for hinges.

By how much, approximately, can the holes be overlapped? I want to use a forstner bit in a pillar drill for morticing (i.e. drilling out the bulk of the waste, and finishing off with a chisel to clear the corners).

Thanks!
