Have a look at http://www.scrollsawgoodies.com especially at the videos - look at the bottom of the menu to the right of the page. There's some videos about making patterns in Gimp and Inkscape.

thats a great site martin, glad you pointed it out as i was only going to take every day things and join them together to make a name plaque with trimmings (if you like).
I dont do that sort of cutting so dont use that sort of pattern, but ifs that what type they need that site has it covered..
