Malcolm, almost finished. Another coat of poly to go, then flock the insides.

Not up to your standards of course, but i think the idea was a good'un.

You can easily see the size variation.

Those are first class and for your first effort are really superb. I love the wood composition, which can be a little more difficult to sand and get a good finish on, so do enough coats. The flocking may also be awkward as stripes sometimes show through once the flocking is done, depending on colour. I now coat the inside of the drawers with an appropriate paint after sealing of course, (always a couple of sealing coats in drawers to prevent the colout seeping through) before I use the coloured glue.

A great start and looking forward to seeing the finished items and the next few boxes.

Malcolm

I'm sure that others will wish to comment on your first boxes.

Mmmmmm, bacon*

*don't forget, I'm not taking the mickey, I wouldn't have a clue how to make something that clever, this is my natural defence.

Thanks. I have made other boxes, but this is my first pair, and I am pleased with most of it (apart from size difference of course).
I am going to have to buy a bobbin sander as I cant get the inside curves smooth. Good job my birthday is next month.

I havent yet done any flocking so I shall have to try on a scrap first. I have a problem there though as the glue used by suede tex cant be shipped by air (explosive mixture). I have contacted them and they said I can use a slow drying oil based outdoor furniture paint as the glue. So its going to be a complete stab in the dark.

Nice job sunnybob, I'd be well pleased with those. Time to get flocking!

Very nice work =D>

BTW A bobbin sander is very useful, though a really sharp cabinet (card) scraper can work well too.

Try and do the insides before you glue the back on. Don't take off too much or the drawers will be sloppy, but its far harder to do the sanding afterwards. Files also help is you dont have the bobbin sander, but a good blade and careful cutting should leave the insides reasonably smooth.

Flocking with exterior paint will be interesting, but carefully cut self adhesive felt has been used by many woodworkers to great effect.
Malcolm

I've used the felt several times as you can see with this one, but I wanted to try the flocking as well.

the pair are my first bandsaw boxes with curved surfaces on my new axminster 350 saw, using an axcaliber blade. It was not as easy to cut the curves as I thought it would be so i shall have to get a tuffsaw blade as a comparison.
