Made this today, but feel I could use a nicer font, this one is forte, but doesn't suit all initials. does anyone have any better suggestions please?

Nothing wrong with that font Gill, there are hundreds available and it's always difficult choosing the one we like the most. What I have found in the past when designing various things is that I make what appeals to me and now and again I find that the customers just don't like them, they do sell eventually. What I di now is ask the family what they think and they always give me an honest answer, that's why they didn't get any Christmas presents last year.

I think what you have created there Gill is a very nice candle holder, it has lovely lines and is not cluttered and I love the choice od woods. That will sell without a doubt.

Thanks Geoff, think I will just have to play about with different fonts for different letters, showed this one to a lady who had ordered a personalised keyrack for a gift, and she has bought this as well, so that's encouraging :D
Still without my planer as the switch hasn't arrived yet, so fiddling about with bits and bobs of already planed wood, or making thick things

Gilljc, I'm a very long way from being an expert, but I think Chippygeoff's quite right, it's purely a matter of personal taste. If it were me I'd be very pleased with the look of both your "K" and of the whole piece.

But re different fonts, do you have MS Word (or some similar word processor) on your PC? If so you'll have a load of fonts already included. If not, or if you've already checked your Word and don't like the fonts already loaded, then Google for free fonts - there are several web sites that allow you to download fonts.

Personally, with the little I've done so far I just fiddle about in Word until I find something that looks OK to me, print it out at about the same size the finished wooden item will be, then show the paper to my wife. If she says "OK", then I'm in business!

There are so many fonts around it's bedazzling - but I would probably find the actual letter I liked and then tune it. As you say you may prefer a specific letter in a certain font. Apart from upper case there are also 'headline' fonts which were designed for just that and tend to work bigger.
They were all designed for print (2D) and that is why I would want to take a basic shape I liked and adjust accordingly so it balances in 3D better. You may consider just slimming it a little to compensate for the depth it has, i.e. reduce the mass a little.
My own strong view of fonts is the older classics are best (generally) - they were designed by hand and eye many years before computers - like Gill, Bodoni, Helvetica, Baskerville etc etc.

Thanks to all :) have spent ages hunting down some new fonts online, think was 101fonts, and as ever whenever I download new fonts, for some reason my antivirus always finds a malware virus and so it spent ages doing a system scan and reboot  but don't think that is the fault of the website, which for a computer idiot is nice and easy to use.
I have also finally found the button on inkscape that lets me 'skew' letters. I know that years ago word used to let me do this, but think I have a cheap version or something as it doesn't give me half the options I used to have :(
Anyway, fingers crossed I have a couple of useable letters for samples/ future Christmas gifts now
thanks again
Gill
