I am looking to get a small laminate trimmer for various edging job, so I don't have to use my big 1/2" router.

I like the look of the dewalt twin set with plunge and fixed, however never quite understood the benefits of the fixed base versus plunge. You can adjust the height on fixed base, and you can fix the height on a plunge router, so what's the benefit?

Thought I'd like to finally find out before I take the plunge.

I'll get me coat...

i saw 15 pages of general discussion.

From what I can see the fixed base makes it smaller, lighter, and easier to handle when for example doing edge work, or trimming. I tend to use my router table for bigger jobs, so i think the fixed based could be nice to have it just in my palm.

So control, ease of use, and the depth being really really fixed.

'Twas me who instigated the post on the Makita.

I've researched most of the machines available and I like the look of the Makita best. Price is a factor of course!
I've decided to buy one but need to change bearings on My little Mof96e and want to make sure it's ok before buying 'cos if not I'll buy the kit which includes the plunge base rather than a basic machine.

I don't think it matters much which version or make really but certainly I couln't do without a small router as my 1/2" DeWalt is just too big for some jobs.
