I'm sure somebody will be along soon, but in the meantime why not put up some more detail of what you want and what size tank its for. I've built a few over the years and the basic structure can be as easy or complicated as you want to go. The cladding/finishing is the tricky part.

It is for a marine tank setup. Main tank 48" x 24" ..... Sump tank in cabinet 36" x 18" ..... Simple design in burr oak veneer ..... See eBay item number 230931108892 as an example .....

Make sure the stand builder knows to finish the inside of the stand with a water proof finish (and all joints insided sealed), the hot humid air in an inclosed stand play havoc with most man made boards and timber. The effects wont show straight away but untreated sheet can sag and blow and timber can move all over the show. Had to shore up a couple of stands from well known manufacturers over the years, a bit un-nerving when laying under 100 gallons of saltwater propping up sagging poorly made stuff...

would any of the ingredients contained in the various types of wood be a problem to the fish? I've kept freshwater tropical fish before and know marine fish are more susceptible to change in water composition.

You will only have problems if the wood is in direct contact with the water or you have an area of the stand/lid that gets splashed a lot and the water runs back into the tank/system. Under tank sumps can be a problem like this sometimes, condensation forms on the inside top of the stand and drips back into the sump. The last couple of stands I made that I put any effort into had 2mm white pvc sheet cut and fit into the stand (all edges sealed up as well), this was actually a fair bit quicker than doing several coats of paint/varnish. It has to be said tho I do hate painting..
