Hi,

New to this forum but would like to hear peoples advice on the below table saw and any other recommendations people have for the budget.

I am looking for a saw that can make accurate clean cuts and has the capability of cutting 8x4 sheets down in all directions. I would like to spend up to about £1500 and the best thing I have found for the budget is the Axminster Trade Series PS315 (sorry not allowed to post link). The saw will be used daily for work but not very heavy use.

Thoughts and advice please

How much "in all directions" are we talking here? You may be better with a smaller table saw (by which I mean cheaper) and a track saw.

If you are wanting to cut 8 x 4 sheets this machine may struggle as you would need the rip fence for ripping down the length and that really needs table extensions, possibly front and back to support the beginning and end of the cut. It depends whether you are working on your own and the size of the majority of the parts you are cutting, if they are mostly wardrobe and kitchen carcase sizes, I would look for something bigger. If you are cutting smallish components it would be fine.

You need a large space for cutting 8 x 4 sheets on a saw, about 5.0m x 3.0m

If you have 3 phase dont rule out second hand if you can afford to wait, you would get a much bigger machine for the same money, which you may find works out better long term if you are cutting sheets every day.

Seriously consider a track saw and smaller table saw. I have the Charnwood W650 which I think for the money is excellent.

If you want to work full size prywood sheets on your table saw you must have a full sized slider. Altendorf or Steton or Martin or something like that. Personally I would prefere a model that doesn't have phenolic runners on the slider. They wear down over time and are difficult to replace.
With a bit of luck you could find a full size slider secondhand in good condition for 1500 punds but it will take up a lot of space and it requires 3 phase electricity.

An used vertical wall saw plus a smaller table saw would be a spacesaving option.

I second this approach.

In your situation, I'd be tempted to get an Xcaliber cabinet saw (http://woodfordwm.co.uk/acatalog/Table_Saws1.html) and a track saw with a couple of tracks. Get a good branded track saw such as Festool or Makita, etc. Don't go the cheaper variety.

The Xcaliber range seems to get good reviews and they look like sound kit.

With the above combo, you can break down your sheets within a relatively small footprint and have the functionality of a proper table saw. As others have said, don't under estimate the real estate and support structure a table saw needs to break down an 8x4. Even if you have the space for a full slider and out feed, this will inevitably be filled with other tools, benching and of course wood itself.

Just my £0.02 worth. Either way, enjoy the new toys.
