Hello,
I have milled down a solid slab of black walnut to make a console table.

Should I bother finishing / sealing the underside? I was always taught not to in woodworking class as it allows the wood to breath reducing the chance of warping / cupping / twisting etc. I was taught to only finish for aesthetic appeal. Is this right? The piece is plenty dry and about 3 inches thick. The top and sides have been finished with boiler linseed oil, then several coats of a water based varnish and then a beeswax buff.

Thoughts welcome.

Yes. Finish it both sides the same.
Uneven moisture absorbtion throughout the seasons can cup even a thick board.

I didn't do the under side of a table, I've had to put an inch extension on the leg on side as it's bowed that much! Lol... Probably other factors involved. But I have to blame something other than me haha..
Good luck mate.
