Hi. i am putting a 2 inch thick floating oak shelf in our bathroom,it is having a small wash basin on. all i was going to use was a polyurethane varnish with the first coat diluted .would this be a good finish do you think. all help much appreciated. cheers mark

Yes that’s exactly how I do all my oak, first coat diluted slightly and then two more except in your case I think you ought to use oil based polyurethane varnish. Ian

Or Treetex hardwax oil that’s what I used on the oak my basin sits on & has for many years.

Have an oak shelf I'm my en suite, gets quite humid regularly. I finished it with Osmo Polyx Hard Wax Oil, 3 coats. This was in January, no issues so far although obviously it will require refinishing in time.

Regards

Nick
