Finish for kids toys

Should hopefully be a simple one...

What is a suitable finish to apply to some wooden childrens toys (various animal shapes)?

They're made out of beech and I've got a little 'un who will no doubt put them straight in his mouth when he picks them up! :roll:

Or, should I not apply a finish at all?

I have used food colouring in the past. Uses quite a bit of it though.

Thanks for the suggestions. Hadn't thought about using colours which might look quite nice.
