Finish for ash shelf

I like a pale shellac on ash. I am not sure what is going on the shelf and how durable it needs to be though.
 
p.s. going to be used as a shelf in the bathroom for the mrs's bits and bobs, make up etc.
 
Try Osmo Oil (Polyx or Top Oil), 2 thin coats. It will darken the wood slightly, but will give reasonable protection in the damp bathroom environment - and if it does get marked or start looking shabby all you have to do is apply another thin coat - no need to strip back the old one. I would avoid any shellac finish in on anything that might get damp or wet - it will mark!
