Hi all
I am making a cupboard for a reception area from oak veneered mdf, it need to closely match the existing furniture, which has a slightly orange glossy finish. It looks like it has been sprayed on. Does anybody have any ideas on how or what to use to replicate.

Bean,
Matching colours you can see is hard enough, matching ones you can't see is getting really tough! That said, a button shellac will impart an orangey look and just padding on a few coats will produce a nice smooth finish that looks as good as a sprayed finish.

Other than that, it is a case of deciding on the finish you want/need to use and experimenting with appropriate dyes/stains until it's right. You can also glaze between coats of clear finish.

Have you got a good book on finishing by Flexner, Jewitt or Dresdner for example? They all cover this sort of thing pretty well. A colour wheel from WH Smiths is a help too.
