Bought a laminate floor repair kit from Homebase, there is a large tube of filler, 3 small tubes of dye, clear lacquer, small brush, and a couple of other bits. Anyway it gives you a colour chart and mixing ratios, I think it is acrylic. It worked great on the damaged floor so I guess it would be ok on wood, it was £ 7.00 something.

That's an interesting option Pete Thanks.
I followed another tip off one of the forums to buy powder pigment designed for colouring mortar and instead use it with araldite to make a filler and that was quite successful too. There is a seller on Ebay who sells 50gram packs in a wide range of colours.

Hi,

I have been using instant coffee to colour epoxy for filling knots in pippy oak, araldite goes off very fast with coffee in but the much cheaper wilcos one dosn't.
