filler and finishing

Guys - I am am looking to stain some birch ply wood in walnut but going to need to fill a couple of mitre gaps So what recommendation do you have for filler that wont show through in the stain, or a stain or something that wont allow the filler to show through....

AFAIK wood filler will take stain, but you might need to use a different colour to match the stained birch so that it'll blend in.
