Not jealous (much). But i do have that self same problem with my domino, so it will be fixed in the morning :)

Well it is the Festool USA training facility so they are gonna have all the gear & Sedge is a great bloke, the hints & tips he gives are really useful if you have Festool gear so no not jealous at all but there could be another reason for that, possibly

No. Festool is just the Apple of the tool world and there are superior products from other companies. I have a few grey/green boxes which i will be swapping out for better tools from the likes of Mafell/Mirka.

Well, if you want to go down-market  you can sling those unwanted grey/green boxes in my direction.

Mirka have had too many reliability issues for me to buy their gear & whilst it would be great to go down the Mafell route their range of tools is no where near large enough (as also isn’t Mirka’s ) & they aren’t that interested in increasing their range or indeed updating their old machines.
That said both their tracksaw & jigsaw are the best money can buy, but again they only do one of each, though still worth having.

I’ve seen the video you linked to a long while ago & saw nothing I didn’t expect, for me the proof is in the pudding & my TS55 is 11 years old & still in regular use.

You need more than one of each? I'm not knocking all the festool gear, as I have said i own a few boxes (OF1400/TS55/MFT/CTL/Rotex 150&90/D500), I also have some Makita/Bosch/Dewalt and Lamello. As a part-part-part-time hobbyist, i just don't understand the cult like status, and making everything under the sun is no sign that every product is as good as the next but the perception is that it is just that.

I don’t disagree, infact there are a few of their tools I wouldn’t buy.
My comment re only doing one of each was more about offering variations, I would have much preferred a track saw with a deeper cut when I bought a MT55 if I’d have gone for another Festool I could have had a TS75 as they offer two depth of cut.

As for cult like status I think you get that round a lot of brands you only need to read the forum posts on here how people insist their chosen brand is the best & look on social media to see their following.
The thing with Festool was they were the first to produce a system with all the forethought that involves, if you use & build on that system you appreciate what a good thing it is & how it can make you more productive, the problem with it is that system comes at a price which is why you get folks who can only see the price tag, but if the system makes you more productive the added cost is irrelevant as you soon recoup it.
That said it doesn’t work for everyone & for those it doesn’t work for then they are just over priced tools

All fair points, personally i have no issues with pricing, you generally get what you pay for and my tools get VERY little use at the moment so i expect them to last a good while :)

I find most Festool users lean in this direction. Yes there are the fan boys who obsess and treat it like a tool version of Pokemon but most users in my experience get what they can from the system and shop elsewhere where it makes more sense.

Personally, Im not exactly taken by the jigsaws and the drills are way over priced in my opinion.

I have quite a bit of Festool gear, works well for me and happy with most of it, can't see me buying anything else from them though unless they release a new unique tool like the domino was.

At on time they were way ahead of the competition but now everyone has caught up.

Love the plug-it leads for in my workshop but they have got left behind on the cordless front.

Think they should give you the option to buy their tools without the systainer for say £30 less.

Im sure at some point they will end up in the for sale section :D

have you SEEN the inside of a TS 55?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oezp-_DcUgg

dirty dirty secrets

Such a load of bull dung. I know of at least three different ts55 still going strong after 10 years that probably have never gone back to festool since the 3 year warranty period expired. My midi has needed a few cables and top trays over the years but still works as new and its 8 years old. I've never even changed the filter!!

And I regularly use the systainers as hop ups. All 20 stone of me never even cracked one.

Why does it bother you let people buy what they want....

you want some kind of medal? I think the point of that video was to show there are items with better build quality for the money. no one cares what you buy, enjoy it.

I've got two pieces of festool gear. They're well made. Were they worth the extra cost (comparing saws, the one festoolish piece that i have that isn't festool is an sp6000k track saw). Probably not - not to me. To a fanboy, of course - maybe it helps if you're writing the stuff off.

The idea of working in a shop like that with all of those "systainers" turns me way tf off. Big time. The cost of their little gadgets and devices (and money wasted on "Adapters" if you don't get their stuff across the board) is dumb, too.

Anyone who is a hobbyist, in my mind, is just as well off (far better in cost, but similar in time) in getting decent power tools and doing final fitting by hand. Or working entirely by hand if you're willing to give up a little bit in productivity.

Just checked my TS 55, bought it in 2005  , use it most days. Just had to buy a new base for it (think £65) as the old one was getting worn, can't really complain at that.

Did have a bad experience with my Kapex which Festool handled really badly so they are not perfect but in general it's good quality, well designed stuff.

Interesting. I quite like Festool gear but I almost always buy it pristine, second hand from tool collectors on an upgrade path. The domino is very good as is the multi tool - way better than Fein for some reason, even though I think Fein make the Festool product.

For track saws I much prefer my Mafell to Festool.

For my use the 12" Bosch chop/mitre saw is more useful than the smaller Kapex as a chop/mitre saw. But I want to cut mitres in 4" oak.

I don't find the Festool routers any better than Trend.

Not tried the one handed planer yet, but I've got one coming from eBay for peanuts as I am soon doing another oak building and this is a quick way of whipping off the snaggy splinters on corners (which catch and rip sander belts)

The Festool work light and heavy duty tripod is a really good bit of kit. I actually bought that new for once, using a Voucher and FFX special deal which a member here posted about =D> I found that amazing for decorating and finishing work. However, in my current kitchen build I am presently using massive LED photography panels. Hollywood here we come.

I think any of the branded drill and driver systems are much of a muchness. I have Milwaukee drill and both their standard and oil drivers. They have taken a lot of heavy work driving stuff like 8" timber fix bolts into hard oak , but I think Festool or Makita would too. I don't think drivers are really a Festool specialism?

Much prefer Mirka sanders to Festool similar but bulkier offerings. Not had any reliability issues with mine.

For belt sanders of a heavy duty nature, Makita is my weapon of choice.

Festool vacs are pricy but very good. I bought mine as new, but second hand and would not part with it. Lidl vacs are also good and dirt cheap.

The Festool worktable system though is crazy expensive.

For big circular saws I like Hilti. Very tough and reliable. If I could justify the 12" Makita or could get my hands on a 16" Grizzly at sensible money, I would.

De Walt is my nailer system. I find it pretty good. Got fed up with gas nailer.

Looking at the above list makes me realise I have zero brand loyalty at all

I know people like to have a single battery system or whatever, but I don't really care. I have a place where I charge all my stuff up but if I was working out of a van it would be different. I also use 110v and 240v. It's no bother in a workshop environment.
