Went over to St Fagans in Wales today. Saw this and had to marvel at the skill and patience involved. I counted 64 captive rings alone. The seat and foot board is the only thing not turned. It would have been done on either a pole lathe or a treadle lathe as it was made well before the age of electrickery. Couldn't see what the wood was but it would have been a local one. It was approx. 4' tall, 2' 6" wide.

so one captive ring gets broken and the whole thing goes to the tip?

mind you I guess it keeps the turner in work!

They must have had different taste back in the 18th century!

Must confess I think it's as ugly as sin but couldn't help admiring the skill and patience of the maker. There was on ring missing, don't know if it had broken in the making or not. There is no way to make a 2nd on in the pace allotted if you did break one.
