Evening all. I posted this (as my first post) in hand tools but then figured it might gain more response here.

A 7-piece Carpenters Tool Set is selling for £51.99 on Amazon at the moment [I can't post links yet].

Faithfull CARPBAG Carpenters Tool Set (7 Pieces)

Is this good value and are they any good for a beginner set?

Thanks

Bear in mind I'm a total beginner as well, but currently researching a lot. But here's what I think.

I assume you mean this - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002SHNQZ4/? ... B002SHNQZ4

I got some good responses from my thread asking about a decent cheap starting tool kit - buying-a-basic-tool-kit-for-woodworking-t64014.html

In particular this toolset looks really nice - http://www.mehr-als-werkzeug.de/product ... arters.htm - but not cheap!

When you think that a 'decent' brand new no 4 plane starts at over £100, then £50 for a bunch of tools gives you an indication to the quality of the kit. Personally I'm still buying stuff, but there's a lot to be said for buying bits of ebay. You can get a second hand chisel for about £5-6, a no 5 plane for £25-30. A bog standard oilstone can be bought from Axminster and I'd buy the measuring kit new from them as well.

A no 5 plane is the 'recommended' starter plane as well. Ray iles sells reconditioned planes, which are supposed to be good - http://www.oldtoolstore.com/. Also this place looks good - http://www.oldtools.co.uk/. Personally I like the look of the old tools and there's still plenty of life in them. You could by a no5 of there for £30, a set of chisels for £30-40 and then have another £30 for a couple of squares, markers and the like. So you can probably get the basics for £100 and go from there.

Thanks mate. Yeh research is hard as everyone has their own - sometimes very unique - advice.

That sounds pretty dead on, though that toolset might be a bit out of my price range! I'm on a woodworking course at the moment so get to use the chap running it's tools. I think I will pick a project after finishing that and start by getting what I need for that using the pointers you gave.
