Faircut lathe
Faircut lathe made in Sheffield 1930s in excellent order, well designed with guards on head stock gears and proper clamp on the tail stock. Supplied by Henry Osborn Ltd a Newcastle tool shop demolished to make way for Eldon Square.
Not a lot of information on the usual sites (lathes.co.uk) but very similar to Myford ML4 and Drummond 3 1/2” machines and their clones as it was a competing product when launched. Beautifully designed.
The bearings run smooth and are lubricated each time the lathe is used and the bed is in super condition and not damaged.

The lathe is compact for bench mounting, centre height is approx 3 1/2” (ignoring the gap) ands it is about 19” between centres. It would be possible to move motor closer to the lathe by using a shorter belt.


Has all usual feature - auto carriage feed, again very well designed with a beautiful lever arrangement, top slide, cross slide and tool holder. Back gear for low speed high torque operations


3 speeds but could be augmented by adding further pulleys in the drive train.


Tailstock has Morse Taper 1 same as chuck spindle.

2 top quality chucks:


4.5” 4 jaw Burnerd chuck and key


Also 4.25”Pratt. 3 jaw self centering chuck with key


Also 5.75” face plate and a variety of HSS cutting tools and spanner’s


Half horsepower motor wired through accessible NVR switch. This needs to be secured to bench
Work lamp and electric socket included.


This is a very heavy machine that will compare very favourably with the small Chinese lathes costing much more with potentially dodgey circuit boards.


Collection only from near Carlisle, not willing to risk sending by pallet etc

Thanks Phil. IF as described, that's a good price I think. But thinking further, it clearly does need collection, and it IS a (very) long road journey from here, so I'll drop out, thanks. But IMO a V good buy for a starter.

Yes it’s a good machine,I have had about 16 lathes of various ages and this compares well with older Myfords and Drummonds, Brittanias etc that I have owned.
I feel the description is accurate and fair. At the moment the motor’s weight is providing belt tension as it is not all secured to a solid bench but I turned some steel yesterday with satisfactory results. It’s set up so the buyer can see it working and try it all out. Another reason for not sending off in a van!
I have also had the odd mini lathe and become aware of their shortcomings which is the attraction of these heavy old machines which should run for many happy years if taken care of.
I have a mate who delivers sheds made in Stourbridge so it is occasionally possible to have him drop stuff off down the M6 corridor from Carlisle south on his way down.
