I cut this piece of beech through planning to make a small turning, and realised how I liked the bookmatch. The cross-section's about 100mm tall x 40mm wide. If I cut each to 10mm deep and mount them together on a sheet of ply, will they be stable? MC is about 10 pc.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Maybe it's a silly question, but I'll try to be clearer. Is the fact that the surface is nearly all end grain likely to be a problem in terms of shrinkage/ expansion? I plan to glue it with regular wood glue to a ply board. If so, would there be any alternatives on attaching to the board?
I've cut and finished it to size, and put a first coat of Osmo Raw on all faces.

Are you talking about a purely decorative wall hanger?
If so, that fault will quickly fill with dust and insects, and your missus will put it in the bin the first time you leave the house.

It might be worth playing with crystal clear epoxy if you dont have enough to do. #-o

It is, and I didn't even think of that. The missus walked several years ago so I tend not to worry too much about a bit of dust/ few dead insects, but you're right. This is for an upcoming exhibition (so hopefully it'll become someone else's problem) and since I've gone ahead and sanded and put finish on I'll leave it as it is, but definitely want to start learning to use epoxy - I even have some here ready for the day I need it...
