Hi all,
My old Elu bandsaw ( similar to deWalt 3501) sometimes is unwilling to start. The motor hums but no blade movement. If I open the access doors and give the wheel a turn (not the safest method, but just to see) it then starts up and seems to run fine. It often starts fine on its own afterwards too. Does this sound like the motor start capacitor is starting to fail?

Yep, motor capacitor, get your self a run cap of Ebay/Maplins etc.

I have a fan motor that has the same fault. It came off an oven (yeah, a big oven) & now powers my apple scratter. It has a centrifugal switch instead of a capacitor. This CFS doesn't always fall back into place when the motor comes to a rest. It just needs a very nimble tug on the belt to get it going if it doesn't start by itself. These switches are either internal or external - internal ones can't generally be repaired/replaced which is why I have my motor. If your motor makes an unusual ticking sound (similar to a bicycle's gears) as soon as you switch it off that slows as the motor does then & doesn't have a capacitor then it could be this..
