Hi,

Just discovered one of these in the workshop. 'Discovered' means I have never used it and I also had no idea what it was until I looked into it. Please see attachments. I have removed the guide arms at each end for cleaning. It looks pretty clean and has a chuck? with a blade installed. The mechanism rotates freely. I wanted to see if it worked so I plugged it in and pressed the green button in the black block in the photo.

There was a buzzing noise, the belt rotated slowly, then not wanting to cause any damage, I pressed the red button and it clicked off. I presume there may be something wrong with the starter button block or the actual motor itself. Do these things have brushes that wear out?

I want to advertise it for sale soon, so any help would be appreciated on how to fix the non-starting problem.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a start/run capacitor problem on the motor, if you have a look at the motor there should be something attached to the side (Judging by the photos it would be that tube), take that off and you should reveal the capacitor. You will want to replace it with one that's got the same microfarad (μF) rating, make sure to check what type of capacitor it is.

Be careful when removing the capacitor as it can still hold an electrical charge if it has been started within the last hour or so and can give you a hell of a jolt.

Great, thanks for the advice. Couple more questions:
1. Does the capacitor housing come apart easily?
2. Where can I get a new one or replacement (Maplin shut a few years ago) or is this a specialist component?

Your comment about avoiding a jolt is noted!

No idea! You'll probably have to undo a couple of screws or something but I honestly don't know how, it should be pretty straight forward once you start looking at it.

They're quite a common component to fail so they're very easy to find online, once you have the existing in hand you will be able to read it's microfarad rating and capacitor type (Start or Run) and google for example "60UF Start Capacitor". You might also want to make sure the one you're ordering will actually fit back in as they can be different sizes.

Great, I'll let you know how I get on.
If it works out, I presume this machine tool is the sort of thing that would be of interest to woodworkers (?)

It's been a while but I have an update. Having spoken to the capacitor manufacturers, I obtained and fitted a new one. There was no difference in function. I suspected the magnetic coil that latches the green push button switch. I dismantled the box and all seemed OK inside. I then dismantled the grey front electrical cover, to attempt to bypass the coil. The 4 terminal choc block was found to have completely melted! But the electrical connections were intact and non-shorting. I documented the wiring connections. I then installed a high current rating choc bloc, double checked everything and tried again. With the starter coil removed, the motor just hummed and did not rotate. Re-inserting the starter coil gave more interesting results. Pressing the green switch, I felt the switch latch and the the motor spin up. However, to avoid the green switch buzzing and vibrating, I had to physically hold it in. It will hold in position but it vibrates and buzzes. But the drive pulley with belt on DOES NOT rotate. When I press the red button, the green switch unlatches and I can hear the motor run down from a high speed. The fundamental problem is that the drive pulley is not rotating.
Does this mean there is a mechanical breakage inside the motor or is there a gear lever somewhere that makes the drive pulley kick in?
I can try taking the motor apart to see what the problem is.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Can I buy a spare motor?
I have downloaded the User Manual and I am not convinced the wiring on my unit exactly matches the single phase version in the manual.

I have one of these stuck in the corner of my workshop, never used it since I upgraded to a Wadkin :D

Mine always had a problem on start up, I presumed it was capacitor but never got round to looking at it. It would start really slow and gradually build up to full speed, once it had been running a while would start up fine while still warm. Sometimes I had to start it on slowest speed as it would blow fuse on start up.

Mine is definitely wired different to yours as mine has an on/off switch in the front of the cabinet. The switch on mine always buzzed.

There is no lever to make the drive pulley engage, it should just spin when you turn it on.
