could someone more clever than me wrt electrics answer a couple of questions about leccy motors please?
I am looking for a 1 HP or thereabouts electric motor to build a drum sander. It seems silly to me paying £50 or upwards for a new one when there are so many lying around. I got to thinking - what about an old belt sander? They are often 800 or so watts which is 1 HP - any reason why the motor could not be adapted? What's all this about it needing to be an induction motor?

No reason just the noise level and induction motor will be continuously rated and prob easier to mount

An induction motor will me much quieter. Also, a universal (brush) motor loses power as it slows down, so pressing harder on the disk will bring it to a stop much more quickly. An induction motor will keep it's power up under load much better. I would think you'd be able to find a used 1hp induction motor without too much trouble.
