May be a bit of fun but it's a great way of getting the knack of that light touch to do the lead.

Exactly that Pete. I find it tricky to skew away from the headstock, the only way i feel comfortable is swapping hands and doing it left handed, so as you say its a good way to practice the gentler cut in the 'wrong' hand.

I too find it difficult moving a skew away from the headstock and work left handed (if I have to   ). I also find it difficult with varying diameters - I think it is just a case of practice, practice, practice until it becomes second nature. (hammer) (hammer)

As much of the work I do is spindle work I find that using a skew has become something I do without thinking. Like most turners I avoided it like the plague for the first couple of years but once you get the hang of it you tend to reach for the skew rather than any other tool when turning spindles. It is a jack of all trades tool and can do coves, beads and is probably the most useful and adaptable tool you can have.

So how did you manage to get the lead in the middle of the blank then ?

Nah, just luck getting the first one right; then it's just a case of making carbon copies.
