I have been asked to make some egg cups, what do I finish them with. I am probably going to use iroko as I have a chunk the right size. Is Iroko food safe and how would you finish it. I have tended to use french polish and wax on everything that does not contain food.

Hard Wax Oil or Melamine Enhanced Lacquer will stand a wipe with a damp cloth or gentle swill in clear water for cleaning.
A boiled egg is in its own food safe casing assuming it is "boiled" so wood type should not be significant.
These were done with Melamine and have kept their finish as far as I know, ours have anyway.

I always use teak or danish oil on egg cups we still have some that I made some 10 years ago and they are as good as the day I made them

What ever else you do Wildman don't use my effort, or at least don't put it in a challenge, or you will be chastised for them not being hygenic and easy to clean

They are finished in melamine lacqure and are now in a Dutch home somewhere

Hell, I like them John, I suspect most people don't eat runny eggs these days due to salmonella so no cleaning to do really. Not sure I have the patience for the piercing though, hee hee.

Thanks everyone for some interesting answers.
