Should I refinish it (something I have no experience of) or leave it as is?

From the picture I would say leave as is. Just a good clean and polish.

This stuff is good - Liberon Wax Polish Remover. It gently takes off old layers of wax polish, grease etc. All the stuff that's got the dirt and grime etc. Its not aggresive. Its also quite good for use with the oilstone

An old recipe that seems to work well is a mixture of turpentine and vinegar - about 1 measure vinegar to 10 of turpentine.
