Well I had my first spat for a long while with eBay yesterday!

They pulled one of my listings quoting a policy violation. It was for a vintage cleaver and apparently these are banned on eBay - despite the fact that there are dozens for sale on their site mine is not allowed.

See here for cleavers just in one category ... http://tinyurl.com/nbxvuf6

Of course I've complained bitterly - but I know it won't get me anywhere with the behemoth.

Ah well, c'est la vie!

Most of those seem to be from the US though. It looks like they're afraid of stupid UK legalities. ebay in the US is slightly less stupid than over here.

Roger

I know one seller who had here listing removed because she said it was 'listed elsewhere', I have seen hundreds of listings saying exactly that, but they are not removed.
I have reported a few people for shilling, but eBay do nothing about, for obvious reasons, I do still sell but not nearly a such as I used too.
Did someone report your clever?

I don't know eBay don't say just "policy violation". I haven't even had the courtesy of a reply.

I'm not really that fussed, it's only one of my many listings, but why pick on me? Of course I'll never know as eBay won't tell me but out of shear cussedness I shall keep pestering them for an answer. :)

Bidding on your own or another's (usually friend or relations) listing with no intention of buying but just to push the price up.

And it's illegal!
eBay turn a blind eye, infact I think they encourage it.

I have heard of one person who contacted their local council (trading standards) who took up the case and threatened the seller with court action, that was down the country though, would never happen in Northumberland because they probably don't have enough staff due to cuts.

Same here, & the same happened, elzilcho,

ebay aren't bothered, more interested in the money.

SS.

Agreed. I told them about a guy selling counterfeit Taunton DVDs. Nada. He is still doing it. But as others have said. As long as they get their fees.

It wasn't because it was a cleaver (why would it be?) - there are dozens of them it must have been for another reason.
Wrong. It WAS because it was a cleaver - no other reason (apart from the fact that it's sharp :) ).

I'm well aware there are many on eBay and that was my objection.

Here is their email reply (note my underlining of one particular paragraph!)

Hello Roger,

Thanks for email. My name is Gary and I am glad to assist you regarding your concern about the removal of your listing of Cleaver knife (Item no. 291030325635) and other similar items listed on the site.

First of all, I'd like to thanks you for taking time and reporting questionable items to us.

As, per your information I have proactively searched on the site and found some items which are in breach of our policy and I have forwarded the same to our policy expert team to take action on the them.

I understand that removal of the listing has caused inconvenience to you. I'd request you to understand that this is in no way meant to question your exemplary record with us or your good standing in our community.

Kindly understand that eBay is highly concerned about the sale of knives on the site, due to some untoward instances in the past. You listed cleaver knife which are very sharp and can be misused. As the transaction doesn’t occur in person we are unable to determine where that item would end up.

I understand that the item you listed as collectible value; however, we should still not be permitting on the site.

For more information on the policy please refer the link below:

I apologies if you found the end of auction notice to be offending in any way. I assure you that we are not accusing you in any way its just to inform the members that further breaches of our policy may lead to strict actions against the account.

I’d like to inform you that our policy team is in continuous process of removing such items that our listed on eBay UK; however, there are similar items on the site because hundreds of items gets listed on the site, and hence, it becomes difficult to take action on all the listings on a real time.

Rest; please be assured our policy expert team works all around the clock to check out all such listings and our policy remains equal for all of our members.

Moreover, I'd like to request to that if you find items which are questionable and May in breach of eBay policy, please report us directly by clicking on the 'Report Item' link on the item page. This will help us allot to make eBay a safer community for all of our members.

Thank you for taking the time to clarify your issues with us. Please get in touch with us in case of any further query.

Ring or email your local trading standards office and report him, simples.

Was the word 'knife' in your original listing? I think that may be the reason it was picked on. If you re-listed as a 'kitchen tool' or 'meat cleaver' and omit 'knife' you may succeed.
