I have just bought a camvac 286 and want to make a separator bin. I know ( in principle ) about cyclones, and Theins, but why can you not just have one pipe from tool to bin lid and another from bin lid to vac with a filter over the bin end ? Is the cyclone 'funnel' or the Thein 'slot bit' really necessary ?

You can and I did - with a plastic dustbin. Most of the heavier stuff fell to the bottom and stayed there, the finer stuff just carried straight through to the vac. Having a filter over the outlet to the vac. helps to catch more but the snag is it needs frequent cleaning.
