Hi Guys,

I currently have an old Elektra Beckum SPA1100 with the standard top bag,but a Thein type cyclone acting as a chip collect .Before I try and get a fine filter cartridge for it would I be better ducting the remaining dust to outside.I have no neighbours to worry about and no heating so heat loss is no problem.Having just bought a Record RDSE1for my table saw and sander the SPA110 would be dedicated to my 30cm Planner thicknesser.Any experience ofducting to outside would be really helpful, thanks.

I think most people will say that if you can duct to outside without concern for mess/heating loss, then do it. It takes the whole "filtering enough" debate right out of the equation.

one thing to bear in mind is wind direction. No point venting it out the shed to have the wind blow it straight back in the kitchen door.

My sip vacuum has a truck type paper filter around the fan, and since fitting the cyclone into the system I have removed the bag filter, and only have to brush the dust off the paper filter every 4 - 6 months.
Its amazing how fine the dust that is trapped by that cyclone.

Yep, zero point in spending on a filter if you can just exhaust it outside with no problems

Sorry for the late reply, been out of range for a while but thanks for your input guys.

This may sound stupid but if I duct outside will I still need the dust collection bag for any small amounts of dust or can I block it off and expect everything that does not go in the Thien type chip collector to go outside. Thanks

Anything that is not filtered out by a separator or a filter will be spat out of the exhaust. So if you channel your exhaust outside, then it's all good. Would help to know what dust extractor you have or see a pic

I've never tried this, but it may be worth doing a test to make sure that your dust extractor can push the resultant stream of air through the length of pipe that you need to get to the outside.

Ok, so it's a bag extractor. You need to look at the exhaust in the middle ring to see if you can funnel it out through a 100mm hose to the outside.

Sorry MattRoberts not sure what you mean by middle ring, can you explain please.

Ian I am hope the pipe run from the extractor to outside will only be about 2m long including going through the double block skin wall.I will be putting a Y piece in that 2m run for a second extractor (Record DX1000)

So the extractor you have consists of the motor / impeller and a separator (the blue central bit in that link you sent). This separator lets chips fall down into the plastic bag, and air and dust goes up and is exhausted through the cloth bag.

I believe you said that you're going to use a thien separator, and will exhaust the air outside, so you won't need the plastic or cloth bag. You need to open up the central blue housing, and pipe the air directly from the impeller exhaust through a hose to the outside :)

Ok here is a photo of the set up,the cone on the top will become a reducer from the filter bag diameter down to a 100mm soil pipe for the outside extraction. What i would like to do is do away with a collection bag and block this off completely with the hope that everything that does not go into the drop box/dustbin below the Thien cyclone will go to outside.
