Dust Extract Advice

Not having a large workshop, and really only producing dust from a lathe, bandsaw and a sander, has anyone made their own extract from scratch? If so what with. Thanks.

There was an article in one of the woodworking magazines several years ago on how to build your own extractor using motors from hovers
I tried it and it worked , worked well but it was flipping noisy and in the end I bought one LOL
