Hi everyone new here so here we go I'm looking for spare parts for a early drummond double bed lathe and would like to thank everyone in advance thanks Joe

Hi Joe, welcome to the forum. If you are a Wales supporter, well done for qualifying for the world cup.... I'm not a football supporter, but it's great to see Wales qualify.
Which parts are you looking for?

Hi joe…. I have a Drummond pre B….circa 1906…i have been looking for bits and bobs for mine….they can be sourced but sometimes cost…I found another one with a crosslide etc…so chanced and bought it..so a few spares too.

if you do a Google search …Drummond users group….join that….or there is one on Facebook….

Check out UK lathes, from memory this is where I found a gear cutting specialist. I had drummond, £60 back in 2000, and this, very knowledgeable, chap cut the two missing gears to make the complete set. Twenty years ago now but may be worth contacting Uk lathes, Tony from memory.

I would say that looks a pretty standard gear.....pls check eBay and others ...
there are also bearing /transmission specialits who will prob find u one....
also, a long winded affair look at the direct sale sites in China....
prvided u get the gear angle and teeth correct its easy to modify an excisting of the shelf gear...

I don't doubt that the gear itself could be 3D printed but I do question whether the 'key' would be 'integral' in the original
I think it could be printed. but would take a few iterations to get it to fit well. Not sure what this gear does on the lathe. If it was just used to move the apron by hand, it might work for a while. The fact that the gear failed in the way it did, suggests it's under quite a bit of load, so a printed gear would probably fail quickly, but you never know!!
The key would be integral as shown, but in the original part it looks as if it has a separate key, so a slot could be added.
If everything else turned up a blank. It could be worth a try.

@clogs just suggested searching more for the gear, but it might be better to search for a new pair of gears if the other is accessible?

Essentially that was my point. No competent designer would even consider specifying an integral key.

HPC Gears list only 'MOD' Bevel Gears as standard (a 1906 Drummond would surely be DP) but do also offer 'Specials'. It looks as if the original is a simple 1:1 set so if both can be replaced - and that would certainly be my preference - it could be worth an enquiry.

😁 Who said I was a competent designer?? My 3D model was just a very quick sketch to show it could be achieved. It wasn't going out into space. That capability comes in the second revision.

I was actually referring to the original designer - not you

The original part looks as if it has a keyway and a key? the key seems to be two widths.
I was just pulling your leg. It will be rev 3 before it can go into space. 😁

It certainly does and I would concider that a detail too far. It may have been an attempt to provide a 'shear-pin' to limit damage to the gears though that seems to have been futile :D
