Drill bits

Hi folks

Having had to do alot of renovation work to our house over the last few hears I've "misplaced" loads of my drill bits. Now I'm keen to replace them with a good quality set and look after them this time! I'm looking for wood, metal and masonry bits. I don't need hundreds, but a good enough range for jobs around the house.

Any recommendation of manufacturer or material would be great.

Hi Jamie

Bosch is the answer for what you are looking for. The Bosch Multi Construction Bits are great all rounders, through Wood, Masonry, Metal and Tiles:

You need to look around for where is best to buy and I purchased a few extra Multi Construction Bits (I think the smallest size is 3mm) to add to the set when I purchased as I like to drill Pilot holes and you might need some bigger holes. If you look on youtube there are some videos on the multi construction bits. Great set to have for DIY and Trade use.

If you can afford it, or are drilling especially into Wood, metal and masonry, then buy the specialist bits from Bosch as they will work faster. I prefer a brad point bit for drilling in wood so recommend the following "Robust Line" sets:

For Wood drilling I also use Irwin Spade bits, Bosch do some good bits too. If you need some SDS bits or plan on doing really big masonry drilling then let us know and I'm sure someone will come along to help.

I have just ordered the Festool Centrotec 2015 set but yet to try it. Unfortunately for those centrotec bits you will need a Festool Centrotec chuck drill but some of the wood bits from festool are recommended well too.

Thanks for the advice. I asked my mate who has his own plumbing business what he recommends and he said Bosch as well! I'll have a look around for prices. I reckon I could persuade the mrs to buy me these for our anniversary!!

For metal cutting Dormer, SKF or one of the other big drill bit manufacturers. For masonry bits try DeWalt Extreme. For wood bits Fisch are supposed to be one of the best but I've not tried them personally.

Bosch S4 SDS. Hilti are brilliant. Armeg wood Beaver for larger sizes. I bought one of those generic 180(?) piece twist drill sets 13 or 14 yrs ago - best thing I've bought. I've topped up the 3mm and the 6mm, but having them in a box has allowed me to keep all the odd one acquired over the years - I think there are more in it now than when I bought it. I believe they're about £40 now - I thought it a little extravagant at the time, but it's paid over and over.
