Morning all, I am after some drill bits, will be used either in cordless drill or drill press (when I finally get it). They would be mainly used for wood but also. Plasterboard walls in the house, any recommendations? I have seen the dormer which look great for all round use.

thanks mark

...... would you recommend any brands?

No. Just get whatever your local Builders Merchant or DIY chain is selling. They're sharpenable. It sounds as if you are new to this, and there is no need for anything specialist just yet. Wait a while until you buy lip-and-spur. They're really only necessary for fine joinery, and even then, they're not a necessity.

If you are doing a lot of work and/or thinking long term, there's a lot to be said for getting one of the 170 (usually) piece sets - I've has one for twenty years and only replaced the 3mms and 6mms. The half mil sizes are useful for repair work.

It's worth pointing out that cobalt bits are much pricier than ordinary HSS bits, and drill exactly the same in wood as their cheaper cousins. They are invaluable when drilling steel, but that's not what the OP will be using them for.

For what I do most of the time, wood and metal, I buy the gold ones in packs for 5 euros and no more.
The equivalent priced ones without the titanium nitride coating are usually made of cheese and will bend!
Probably about 8 or 10 in the pocket sized clear plastic box from the pound shop.
I will only buy those for that price, and always have another box at hand, or the majority the whole box, as in most of the small sizes still there.

You can pay mad money for drill bits, so get a spare box every time you've gone through a few for the price of one bit from the likes of Homebase.

All true Mike. However, when you do want to drill metal, having them is really handy.

I think the Presto set I linked to above is cheap for the excellent quality.

The best quality/value point I've found for lip and spur are the ones sold by Wealden tools. You can buy just the sizes you want to start with. Avoid the chinese cheapies, I've even found off centre spurs and blunt too.

Famag all the way if you can afford them Fish are also excellent ( but you will get the any old bit will do from the its near enough squad) I have tried lots of recommended cheap bits but in the end if you want a good clean cut you will have to pay for it end of
