Drawing a smooth curve on a round object

It may have been posted before but I came up with this idea to draw smooth curve on a round object. I bought a length of Bath chain from Amazon and held it in place with some Blu-Tack at the top whilst I spray paint over and left a really nice curve.

seems effective. I hadn't really thought about it until now, I can see how it would be more difficult than it sounds.
