Hi, this is my first post :D

Can anyone advise me on how to cut dovetails without using a jig?

Welcome to the forums Nick :D

Cutting Dovetails by hand is very rewarding but takes a lot of pratice to get right (as you may already know) but you'll be happy to know once you learn they get better and better :).

I am planing to do a how-to guide on cutting dovetails but for the time being I suggest you read the following webpages

http://www.shavings.net/DOVETAILS.HTM

But also reply 6 from the woodworking.com forums:

Good Luck with the project,

Hi Nick, I'm also new to this site which seems to be a very good one.

I have been making dovetails without a jig having followed a technique explained in a video which came to me free with a subscription to Time Lifes collection of wood working books.

The books are terrific and the video brilliant.

The method shown uses NO measurements and uses an absolute minimum of marking out. The resulting joints are accurate and have that genuine craftsman look about them.

It seems an expensive way to get a free video but there is no other!

If I can help more, please ask. Mike - Surrey

One last tip from a personal point of view.

If possible try cutting the dovetails with a Japanese Fine Back Saw, you will never look back on a push saw. They give you a much more natural relaxed cut which is half the battle with cutting good Doves.

Axminsters Ikedame Saw or the Kumagoro Saw look good buys for the job
