Advice in the Daily Mail (no political diatribes, please!) for women new to DIY - "sanding can be satisfying....... ......But take care if you are using a belt sander (which is useful for sanding large areas of wood and smoothing bumpy walls)".
Swmbo is a very, very good decorator - but the thought of letting her loose on a wall with a belt sander fills me with horror.

I've found them good for creating bumpy walls. When i used one for this last time, and stepped out my front door to get away from the dust, my neighbour thought it looked like a scene from Die Hard.
