Hi,

I’m planning on having a crack at a green oak porch this summer, I suspect some sanding/planning of the posts maybe required.

I’m wondering if the DeWalt DEW733 is man enough to plane a 150mm 8ft post. The spec suggests it will take up to 152mm x 317mm, however I’m concerned about the weight of a 150x150 oak post!

has anyone any experience with this thicknesser in this type of application?

I could just buy a cheap 7 inch planer, however i like the idea of having the thicknesser for other jobs.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

thanks
Dan

Well I think if you like the idea of the thicknesser for other jobs you should get one :D

The largest pieces of green oak I’ve put through mine were 2.5 metres, 150mm by 70mm for some garage doors that I made.

The issue I had with the weight was that the thicknesser wasn’t powerful enough to pull the timber through which meant that I had to feed it in as it planed it off.

This was also a bit of a balancing act even though I used a couple of roller stands. As I fed the timber in the weight of the timber on the base of the thicknesser tended to cause the thicknesser to tip as I fed it through. Ideally it should have been a two man job but most of my mates seem to have other things to do at times like that!

Anyway, it all worked out fine but of course your lumps will be twice the weight of mine.

Go on, give it a go, you know you want to :)

Thanks Geoff, It sounds like it is not really the tool for the job, i think it will be easiler to use a 7" planer just to get a nice finish.

Thanks for the info 8)
