my lathe has been making a sort of buzzing noise
it comes and goes
turns ok and only for a few seconds
turned it on tonight and just a buzz
i turned it off and spun the timber .....nothing jammed
scratched head and and blew out dust etc
turned on again and nasty smell

is it time for a new lathe ?

i bought this one cheap ...so not worth the cost of new motor

Steve

Does it have an induction motor? could well be that the start/run capacitor has failed.

Do not leave it switched on for prolonged periods if not rotating as motor will overheat.

Best indication of failed capacitor is if motor spins up (reduced power) if you give the chuck a starting spin with lathe switched on.

haha wizard

no movement at all if i try hand spin

old brookes crompton...before induction
it is an old coronet hobby

oops it is seized :(

not going to bother with a replacement motor as this was a cheapy starter lathe
found it is so addictive

guess i need a new toy...was not on my list of priority
i only just started with lathe , but it is my escape so need to find a replacement

this will be a difficult choice of which one to get

Steve

There is a record one on the for sale thread at the moment which may suit your needs.

think i will avoid another "starter" lathe and get something a bit more well built

Steve

should i ask for advice in the "buying advice" forum ?
i not sure whether to look for something like a cl3 or new something from axminster

looking at a cl3 with vs upgrade

just worried about getting another second hand lathe tbh

any thoughts?

Steve

Well One Of My lathes is a cl3 With speed Genie that has proved to be good but I don't rate record motors especially the new ones
