I was given this nut and bolt recently. A bit rusty, but useful looking.

Turns out to be a bit of an odd size. The thread pitch is metric, bang on 2mm pitch:

but the diameter is only 15mm.

That's not a preferred ISO size. As far as I can see, if you do want a 15mm thread, it should be a fine pitch option only - 1mm. So what to do?

I tried removing some of the rust - I got it a bit better just by licking it:

Anyone have any idea what I should do next?

ISO Course thread - no M15 sizing
ISO fine thread - M15 x 1mm OR M15 x 1.5mm pitch

But you're right no M15 x 2mm pitch

Drop it in some kind of mild acid, as previous poster says vinegar is useful and everyone has it. Then scrub it with an old toothbrush clean the acid off thoroughly and lightly oil..

Citric acid and warm water works a treat cheap off Fleabay basically lemon juice concentraed powder

You could always check the sticky on restoration techniques collated and posted by the bloke who got me interested in restoring old metal tools and such.
His name is Andy ....

Hey! Hey! Heeeey! Wayda gosh darned minute there Mister! What kinda scam you tryin' to pull here Buddy?

So go on. What's it all about A̶l̶f̶i̶e̶ Andy?
:)

You can get M15 x 2.0 taps and dies but it's hard to find any fasteners! The 70mm long ones I did see were £20... Per bolt....

I thought I was giving you a clue when I said I licked the rust off, but you're all so determined to be helpful!

Maybe this picture will help:

:-"

Am I right in thinking that much torque would strip the thread? I had a pair of pliers very similar

I must admit, I did skew an eye when I saw "licked it", I thought maybe you'd given it a licking on a wire wheel or sommat

Well played =D>

My kids bought me some chocolate tools for Christmas, they looked amazing, only a drill chuck left which for some reason I can't bring myself to eat.

They really are quite oddly convincing, but I've eaten mine now. That chuck would sell on eBay!

NO.

This sort of underhand rubbish should not be allowed. Its a disgrace and you should be ashamed of yourself.

I was going to say how the tip of the thread looked to be gone and it might have been an m16.
Now im just going to be annoyed.

As pay back im going to turn a record no. 4 into a race car. You can consider it your penance and its all your fault.
