A few years ago when it was the fashion to strip the paint off everything and leave bare pine I saw a few staircases similar to yours which had metal brackets all over the place holding things together, you only saw them when the paint came off and the filler came out.
 
Well done. Overcoming the fear of facing something out of your comfort zone (chance of screw up!), and producing something properly done, is so satisfying. (y) Now you're the expert! Thanks for posting your methodology.
 
it's all about time......it's hard for them to justify poking about and faffing trying to get the job done....at who know's how much per hour.....
and we all know sometimes a can of worms will appear unexpected........
when I was yound and learning.....
the old guy's always said....avoid, old cars, houses and women...they all end up in trouble......hahaha...
