Cropping mp3 music files

I want to extract parts of music tracks to accompany a visual display on PowerPoint. Virtually all of the music files are in mp3 format. Does anyone know how I can (a) extract bits of mp3 files and (b) stitch the extracts back together again so that I get one mp3 file of all the extracts.

I downloaded audacity which is a free programme. Its allows you to do loads of different editing and is also fairly easy to use
